Submission Guidelines

General:

• We consider previously published work.
• We welcome submissions from those who have been previously published in Iris.
• We accept multiple submissions per person.
• We require your full name, JMU email, and phone number with each submission.
• We ask that you include any relevant content warnings. 
• Iris has an anonymized evaluation process, including for submissions from members of the Iris staff, which we welcome.
• Iris does not retain publication rights, nor offer financial compensation to artists and authors.

Prose:

• We require work to be double spaced and in Times New Roman 12 point font UNLESS manipulation of fonts/spacing is important to the piece.
• We do not have a strict word limit for prose; however, works over 5,000 words must be extraordinary.
• We will accept 3 pieces or fewer per author.
• Please submit prose pieces in separate documents per piece.
• We will accept PDF files only.

Poetry:

• We count series or sequences of poems as 1 submission.
• We accept 5 poems or fewer per poet, totaling no more than 10 pages.
• Please submit poems in a single document.
• We will accept PDF files only.

Art:

• We require that you indicate the medium of your piece (oil painting, digital print, etc).
• We will not accept photographs of physical pieces and instead require scans.
• We accept 5 art pieces or fewer.
• We accept 10 photographs or fewer.
• Please submit art and photographs in separate files.
• We accept PDF and JPEG files only.
